Dog Training with Raccoon River Labs

A few weeks ago my area received 6” plus inches of rain in a very short amount of time creating large ponds in places that are usually dry. One pond created a great opportunity to train dogs and allow me to shoot my D90. The water was crystal clear so I didn’t have to worry about getting into water too deep.

Raccoon River Labs brought Cooper, Libby, and Mia along with another black lab that is being trained by Scott. The bumpers were launched at different distances and spots around the pond and I walked around taking shots of the dogs retrieving the bumpers. It was a blast seeing them running through the water at full speed towards the bumpers.

Shots were taken at ISO 200 with the bright sunny skies with shutter speeds ranging right around 1/400 to 1/800 sec except when I tried to create motion blur which resulted in a shutter speed of 1/20. Aperture ranged from f7.1 and f8 and increased to f36 when I had to use that very slow shutter speed. Lense used was the 70-300mm extended mostly to 300mm as I didn’t really get close enough as I should of after I reviewed the photographs.
